Resource Naming and Tagging

AWS enables you to assign metadata to your AWS resources in the form of tags. Each tag is a simple label consisting of a customer-defined key and an optional value that can make it easier to manage, search for, and filter resources. Using tags, you can categorize resources by purpose, owner, environment, or other criteria.

As your AWS environment grows, you’ll likely need better ways of organizing the the AWS resources that make up both your workloads environments and foundation. Tags can be useful in support of:

  • Organizing your resources
  • Cost allocation
  • Automation
  • Operations support
  • Access control
  • Security risk management
